Lord Howe Island has an 11 km long lagoon. The island lies roughly North South. The lagoon faces west which means the prevailing winter winds are cross/onshore. This makes for very safe sailing, even if you break something, you will drift back to shore, and the walk of shame is never very long!

The reef fringing the Islands lagoon provides a flat water sailor's paradise. Up close to the reef, the water is crystal clear and flat, one can bear away down one of the prettiest stretches of water around. When you get to the end of the run down south, lay into a hero jibe on a sandy patch and marvel at windsurfing's majesty.

There are all sorts of different water states offered by the lagoon. If you want to go jumping, hit it at high tide and you will find ramps a plenty. if you want a speed strip, hit it at lowtide and hang on. There is also serious jumping to be had out on the reef in safe, deep water. If the wind is offshore. LHI Windsports will organise a support boat to be around in case something breaks.

Outside the Island lagoon is plenty of open ocean suitable for long distance sailing. Book into one of LHIWS's fortnights and embark on a well supported ocean run!

Hang out at either LHIWS shed or the equally well situated LHI Aquatic Club. The after sailing beer is never far away!

The best months for wind are generally June, July, August and September. Lord Howe Windsports will be running windsurfing events during these months, be sure to check out what's on before booking your flights to come over!
